Prepping For Your Engagement Shoot

#1 – Outfit Choices

Most of our couples have two outfits for their session: one that’s a bit nicer (slacks and a button up/ long dress and  heels), and one that is more casual (sweater/jeans, tee shirt/shorts).

When you’re trying to decide what to wear, remember this: it’s better to coordinate than to match.

Bright, colorful details (such as jewelry, shoes, etc) are awesome and really POP in photos.

#2 – Timing is Everything

Please do everything you can to be on time to your session!

When we schedule the portrait session, it’s usually at a time where we can use the light to our fullest advantage!

If you arrive 15, 20 minutes late for the shoot, you could really be cutting into the valuable time we have before the sun sets for the day.

Trust me – we want all that lucious golden hour light!

And speaking of timing…

#3 – Best Shooting Times

Typically an hour after sunrise and and hour before sunset is the best time to take pictures.

I have done exactly one sunrise photo shoot, and to say that I’m not a morning person is an understatement.

Sunrise is beautiful, but sunset is really when I love making the magic happen!

That soft, gorgeous, warm light is absolutely perfect!

#4 – Get Dolled Up

Prepping for your engagement shoot is a great excuse to splurge on some extra pampering!

We totally recommend having professional hair and makeup done.

I totally practice what I preach, and got all gussied up for our family portrait session!

Usually when you book your wedding makeup artist, they include a trial so you can see what your look will be like at the wedding.

The engagement shoot is a great time to use that trial so you can look and feel your best!

When you feel beautiful, it will radiate from the inside out!

And while we’re on the subject, this is a great time to get your ring cleaned so that your bling is as sparkly as possible!

#5 – Location, Location, Location

When choosing a location, I always recommend that we pick a place that is special to you as a couple.

If you’re both into books, let’s go to a library and snuggle in the reading nooks.

If wine is more your thing, let’s plan on heading to Mermaid Winery!

Are you both into sports? What about renting out the Tides Stadium?!

The possibilities are endless!

If you’re stumped, feel free to ask for a recommendation. We’re happy to offer suggestions to create the perfect session location for you two!
