Confession time: I’ve never done a Fort Monroe engagement shoot.

Honestly, I’ve never done any shoots at Fort Monroe (sshhh, don’t tell anyone!).

But when Julie and Alex suggested this as the location for their engagement shoot, I was excited to head across the bridge and get some photos in a new location.
One thing I wasn’t prepared for was how tiny the place was! I mean, you think fort (surrounded by water), it’s going to be pretty small, but it really made for a charming little spot to take pictures! It was like everywhere we went, there was something gorgeous to photograph with/by/in front of! I love this spot and will definitely be trying to talk clients into doing their sessions at this spot!

Julie and Alex, thank you for allowing me the pleasure of taking pictures for you guys! Even though we got pricked to death by the spurs, it was definitely an adventure that I loved taking with y’all!

Get to know a little more about Julie and Alex through their story!

How you two meet?

We met at work.  It was my first real job out of college and he was still working toward his law degree.  We were both super busy and didn’t click right away.  But when he asked me out, I decided to give him a chance because most of our mutual friends thought we’d be good together.  Turns out they were right!

When did you know he was the one?

It seems small and happened slowly over time, but it meant a lot to me.  I would be telling him about something my sister or my best friend was going through, and he started taking up arms for them and defending them (even if it was just in our one-on-one conversations).  When I realized that he cared so much about the people that I care about, I knew that I wanted him there, as part of my family and my go-to support system, from then on.  And Lord knows, I need that support system!! He keeps me sane.

What was the proposal like?

He did so good! He had planned for us to get dinner with a friend on DOG St. in Williamsburg at a nice restaurant so I had to be dressed up.  He had my mom take me to go get my nails done as a girl’s day a few days before so my hands looked good for photos.  Then he had some of my best friends, my sister, and my parents hide behind some trees and take photos while we walked down to the Crim Dell Bridge– this beautiful red painted bridge on William & Mary’s campus.  His question was short and sweet– written on a post-it note (so typical) that we kept.  Of course I said yes!  And then everyone was there with us to celebrate right after!  It was perfect.

What are some of your favorite things to do together?

We love to take mini-vacations.  Usually it’s just weekends away to visit friends, and almost always within driving distance.  If we can’t go anywhere, we literally NEVER have a weekend with nothing planned.  It can get chaotic, but we kind of pride ourselves on that.  And I love that Alex will call anything an “adventure”.  It could be anything– from going to throw a baseball around at the neighborhood school, to going to get ice cream from McDonald’s at 2am— they are our little “adventures” and I love that time together.

If you had to pick a word for your relationship, what would it be?

My word is supportive.  There are times when things get hard, and we get into tiffs.  But at the end of the day, he knows that if he wanted to pursue some other dream in his career, I would support him.  And I know that when I have a crappy day, he’ll be there to take my mind off it.  He’ll be so  goofy and weird, that I’ll just have to crack a smile.

What are three dreams/goals for your marriage?

Our goals are to be happy, to make memories, and to build a life we can be proud of.  We’re already on our way, but I’m excited to keep it up with one of our biggest adventures yet.
