It’s the end of the summer and that means we are coming up fast on the fall season (which is immediately followed by the Christmas season – eeekk!). Hopefully you are getting ready for some updated pictures, and may be wondering what to wear for fall photo shoot. Have no fear – Fresh Look Photography is here! We are going to help get you ready to rock out an amazing photo shoot, and there won’t be any trace of boring here!

What To Wear For Fall Photo Shoot

It Doesn’t Have to Match – It Has to Go

When you think about a color scheme you want to go with for your session, I recommend starting with a basic color palette and go from there. You can do this with a neutral base and a few pops of bright color, or pick a color and have everyone dress in shades of that color. When it comes to picking out clothing, it’s usually easier to start with the girls outfits because – let’s face it – we are the picky ones ladies! So start with the girls/mom’s outfit, and then build a wardrobe around that style/color.

It’s All In The Details

Pay attention to the details: scarves, hats, shoes, jewelry… these all play a part in making you “look” come together. However, keep in mind that sometime, less is more. Wearing that fun, funky hair clip for the session is awesome, but you don’t want to overpower yourself with accessories because the details can become distracting. This is especially true when it comes to kid and babies: those giant bows are super cute, but are they taking away the focus from your sweet little princess?

Layer it Up

Layers and texture can add visual interest to your wardrobe, and are easy to add or take away to give the outfit a different feeling. When we talk about layers, I mean shirts, scarves, vests, jackets, necklaces, fingerless gloves, etc. When we talk about textures, you can mix and match different clothing materials: tweeds, corduroy, crochet or lace, ribbons, ruffles, etc. Texture can also play an important element when changing a photo to black and white!

Props that Pop

Props are awesome because they can add an element of fun to your photo session, while also giving your hands something to do. Because we always want to know “what do I do with my hands?!” Consider using a handful of flowers, a basket filled with apples (or maybe pumpkins!), a favorite stuffed animal, or maybe even something meaningful like a quilt made by great grandma! Again – going back to what we talked about with the accessories – don’t let the props take over the frame. Whatever you include in the photo should make sense in the overall scene.

Get Comfy

Probably the most important thing I can impart to you: wear what you feel good in! This is especially important because the way you feel about yourself in a particular outfit will come through in the images. This is true for kids as well as adults! Moms: how many times have you had to fight tooth and nail to get your little one dressed in something they didn’t want to wear, only to have them sulk about it for ages?
Make sure to wear clothes that are fitted, but not too snug. When clothing is a little too tight, it can show off bulges that you would rather keep hidden!

A Few Do’s And Don’ts

  • Do – make a trip to the salon to get hair/nails touched up beforehand
  • Don’t – make everyone match exactly
  • Do – be fashionable but
  • Don’t – wear something trendy that will date your photos
  • Do – wear neutral colored footwear but
  • Don’t – wear white socks because (inevitable) they will show in the photos
