What To Wear For Fall Photo Shoot

It Doesn’t Have to Match – It Has to Go

Thinking about a color scheme for your session, I recommend starting with a basic color palette and go from there.

You can do this with a neutral base and a few pops of bright color, or pick a color and have everyone dress in shades of that color.

When it comes to picking out clothing, it’s usually easier to start with the girls outfits.

Let’s face it ladies – we are the picky ones!

Start with mom’s outfit, and then build a wardrobe around that style/color.

It’s All In The Details

Pay attention to the details: scarves, hats, shoes, jewelry, etc.

These all play a part in making you “look” come together.

However, keep in mind that sometime, less is more.

You don’t want to overpower your look with accessories because the details can become distracting.

This is especially true when it comes to kid and babies.

All those giant bows are super cute, but are they taking away the focus from your sweet little princess?

(and don’t forget that shoes are an important piece in finishing up your “look”)

Layer it Up

You can add visual interest with different layers and textures.

These are easy to add or take away, and can give the outfit a different feeling.

Layers can be: shirts, scarves, vests, jackets, necklaces, fingerless gloves, etc.

When we talk about textures, you can mix and match different clothing materials: tweeds, corduroy, crochet or lace, ribbons, ruffles, etc.

Texture can also play an important element when changing a photo to black and white!

Props that Pop

One way to add an element of fun to your photo session to incorporating props.

Plus – bonus – it also giving your hands something to do!

Number one question clients ask: “what do I do with my hands?!”

Here are some fun options for you to bring:

  • bubbles
  • a handful of flowers
  • basket filled with apples (or pumpkins!)
  • a favorite stuffed animal
  • something meaningful (like a quilt made by great grandma!)
  • chalkboard signs (and chalk)
  • wooden letters

Again – going back to what we talked about with the accessories – don’t let the props take over the image.

Whatever you include in the photo should make sense in the overall scene.

Get Comfy

Probably the most important advice I can impart to you: wear what you feel good in!

This is especially important because the way you feel about yourself in a particular outfit will come through in the images.

This is true for kids as well as adults!

Moms: how many times have we had to fight tooth and nail to get your little one dressed in something they didn’t want to wear… only to have them sulk about it for ages?!
Make sure to wear clothes that are fitted, but not too snug.

When clothing is a little too tight, it can show off bulges that you would rather keep hidden!

Plus you don’t want to spend the photoshoot constantly pulling/tugging at your outfit.

A Few Do’s And Don’ts

  • Do – make a trip to the salon to get hair/nails touched up beforehand
  • Don’t – make everyone match exactly
  • Do – be fashionable but
  • Don’t – wear something trendy that will date your photos
  • Do – wear neutral colored footwear but
  • Don’t – wear white socks because (inevitable) they will show in the photos
