If you have ever wondered how to rock business headshots, we’ve got you covered!

Because – let’s be real – getting in front of the camera can feel super awkward.

Unless you’re a model or a Marvel superhero, chances are you’re not used to having a camera lens in your face while trying to look effortlessly amazing.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to be a pro to look professional.

After photographing hundreds (maybe thousands?!) of entrepreneurs, creatives, and business owners, I’ve gathered the best tips to help you prep for your headshot session like a total boss.

Whether you are a powerhouse CEO, a solopreneur just getting started, or somewhere in between: this guide will help you walk into your shoot feeling confident and camera-ready.

How to Rock Business Headshots

1. Clothes Make the Brand

When choosing your outfit, think: elevated version of you.

  • For Everyone: Choose clothes that fit well and feel like YOU. If you’d never wear a stiff blazer in real life, don’t wear one just because you think you “should.”

  • Colors: Solid colors are your friend—think rich jewel tones, neutrals, or your brand colors. Avoid busy patterns or logos unless it’s part of your branding.

  • Women: Choose tops with structure—wrap dresses, tailored blouses, blazers, or anything with interesting neckline detail. Avoid spaghetti straps unless you’ll layer something over it.

  • Men: A well-fitting button-up or a sleek henley works wonders. Consider layering with a jacket or sweater for variety. Don’t forget to iron!

  • Accessories: Keep it simple. The goal is to accent you, not distract from your face.

Pro tip: Bring a few outfit options. Layers and accessories can help us create multiple looks without a full wardrobe change.

2. Grooming: Yes, It Matters

No, this doesn’t mean you need a full glam squad (unless you want one!).

  • Hair: Get a trim or touch-up a few days before the shoot—not the day of. You want time to settle into the new style.

  • Makeup: Ladies, aim for camera-ready but not overdone. A little extra blush and mascara go a long way. Men, a bit of powder to reduce shine is perfectly acceptable (and totally not weird).

  • Facial Hair: Guys, clean-shaven or well-groomed beards are key. Don’t experiment with a new beard shape the night before.

  • Nails: Clean, neat nails are a small detail that can unexpectedly show up in shots. Treat yourself to a little tidy-up.

3. What to Bring (Other Than Your Awesome Self)

  • Water (hydration = glow)

  • A hairbrush or comb

  • Lip balm or lipstick

  • Touch-up powder

  • Your favorite playlist to hype you up

  • A positive attitude (corny but true—it shows!)

4. Get Out of Your Head (and Into the Moment)

This is a big one.

You might feel nervous. You might say things like, “I’m not photogenic” or “I hate pictures of myself.” And to that, I say: STOP. Right meow.

You don’t have to be a model—you just have to be you. The real, amazing, passionate, sometimes-laughs-too-loud you.

My job is to help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident so your personality shines through. Trust the process, and I’ll guide you through poses, angles, and expressions so you’re not left wondering what to do with your hands (seriously—I’ve got you).

5. Extra Credit: Practice Makes Perfect

Before your session, take a few selfies or practice expressions in the mirror. (Yes, it feels silly. Do it anyway.)

Notice how your face changes when you smile with your eyes (aka “smizing”), relax your jaw, or tilt your head slightly.

The more awareness you have, the more relaxed you’ll feel during the real thing.

Just to Recap:

Your headshots aren’t just pictures—they’re an investment in your brand.

They tell your audience, “Hey, I’m legit. I take my work seriously. But also, I’m approachable, relatable, and probably someone you want to have coffee with.”

Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, launching a new website, or finally ditching that 10-year-old photo where you had bangs (no judgment), a great headshot can help you show up in the world with confidence.

So come as you are—I’ll take care of the rest.
